Updating Dressing Table Stools

Dressing tables have regained popularity for use in the bedroom or bathroom because of their ability to create a personal and comfortable area to prepare for the day. And they provide a functional storage area for cosmetics, perfumes and hair supplies – which can be vital in small spaces. While this type of furniture is extremely functional and comfortable, it can also match any décor ranging from modern to traditional. But eventually dressing table stools will show signs of wear and tear due to daily use. This damage is easily reversible by investing a few dollars and hours in your day. Also, an update may be required if you are changing your color scheme or design. Regardless of the reason, creating a new look for your vanity bench is quick and easy, even for a beginner.

Changing the Vanity Stool Seat

One of the fastest ways to update the look of a vanity stool is to change the existing upholstery. It is also fairly inexpensive, with upholstery fabrics ranging from a few dollars a yard to $20 a yard or more. If you have your eye on an expensive fabric check the remnant table for an alternative, since you only need a small piece to update the seat. Regardless of the material you choose, make sure it is thick and durable. Thinner materials will wear out quickly, and you may end up repeating this project much sooner than you hoped for. Remember, you not only want your dressing table stool to look good, you want it to withstand the daily use of your personal routine. Once you have selected your fabric, all you need is a measuring tape, screwdriver, scissors and a staple gun. Just make sure to take your time during the reupholstery process to ensure a flat an even finish to the seat.

Refinishing Your Dressing Table Stool

If you have removed the seat from your bench, why not take the extra step and update the finish as well? This could be as simple as repairing the minor chips and dings, giving it a fresh coat of stain or paint, or could require changing the stain or color completely. Whatever option you choose, your dressing stool will look like new in a few hours time. Before you refinish, make sure to prime the surface for the best results. Priming methods can vary depending on the material, so take some time to do a bit of research before starting your project. Once you have finished, make sure the paint or stain had dried completely before reattaching the seat. If you are up for a slightly larger project, consider updating your dressing table too. This way it will match perfectly, and look like new.

Antique Vanity Benches

While much of the work required to update a dressing table stool can be done on a small budget, antique items are an exception to this rule. Updates and repairs for these items should be done by a professional restoration expert, unless you have experience in this area yourself. This is because improper paints, removers, upholstery tools and other items can actually damage the bench, which can affect its appearance and value. And reversing the damage caused by improper redecorating techniques can cost more to reverse, especially if you want to restore the item to its original condition.
